Hello! I'd just like to say I hope that shoe making activity wasn't realistic, or else I think I'd be sick. If everyday life is like that for some people, Free The Children just became a much worthier cause in my mind. Also, that activity that we did in the other building with all the objects and the upper, middle, and lower classes really made a point about how much wealth the people with money in the real world are willing to share.

I had fun and the gr.7s and 8s at my school are trying the shoe game soon. See ya!

I pity the grade 7's and 8's at you're school. Again, that activity was so stressful, and it taught me how horrible it is to be a child laborer far more than the video did.

The movie they played reminded me of a documentary they play at my church. It was called "Invisible Children and talked about how the children in Uganda were forced to become child soldiers. They were forced to kill each other in training. It also talked about how those that weren't yet soldiers lived in daily fear that they too would be kiddnapped from there faliy(if they had any still alive)

Vanessa was a very inspirational speaker and she gave us good example of the terrible lives children have to live. when we went to the other building and had to make cubes I was Scared. There were so many people in my group and we didn't even have the right supplies. With out a leader or knowing how to do this made me think the child labourers are working but they didn't even go through training or anythng how do they know what to do?

I very much agree, Pink Panther. As if it's bad enough that they don't have any training, look at the working conditions. Do you guys remember that story from the video, about that little kid who was sorting through syringes and not being able to get treatment when she cut herself? That was a good story to show how little medical care there is. If Free The Children is still involved in India and that area, I think it would be a good idea to suggest they try a hospital-building project.

Hey! I'm in the thursday class, and i didn't even go to the conference, I justed wanted toy try out the blog. and by the way, master yoda, i think that you are being a bit critical of the shoe making gam. It was just a GAME!!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ha! figure sk8ter, if you had been there you would have been surprised at how desperate the game seemed near the end. I hop real rent doesn't double every month. Of course the actual people would have a month to make them, but they would make actual shoes. The buyers probably wouldn't rip them up, either. It was really annoying when they didn't give you good money for hard labour. I agree that it is awful that people have to live like that every day! That would be so stressful, as said before.

So sad that Wednesday's class missed Laurel Creek. We will not be going next week or anytime soon, since all the Wednesdays are booked for the next stretch of time. Sean will try very hard to find us a day and let us know. Let's keep our fingers crossed!
So.....you can all come prepared for a McQuarrie day next week. No need for snowpants and mukluks!!
Any more conference comments from newcomers to the blog???

I also thought that the lunch game was pretty fun. It was fun having to buy seconds and using the money you had based on your country. We were Nigeria, so we didn't have a lot, but the U.S. gave us some money. We bought a lot of the bread. I wonder what poor country's do for food when nobody is helping them. That's a sad thought:(

Hi, another long post by me on the blog! ^.^" ehehe...

I personally really liked the day at Onondaga Farms. The speech on Free the Children was a little long, but it was very educational. Some of the statistics they have are amazingly shocking. It gives you more points to view about lives-good points, and bad points. I'm amazed that Craig Kielburger could create such a HUGE difference in our world!

Back at McQ...

I'm really looking for to doing some of the original McQuarrie stuff that I'm sure lots of us returners are used to! Last year's Grade 7/8 class got to learn Flash Animation-like, how wicked. is that??

Well, it's late, so I'm out - Snorlax! ¬¬. (Hopefully SNL is good tonight!)

(P.S. Umm, does anyone know what the "a" HTML tag does?)

First, I have no idea what an HTML tag is. Regarding the trip, I too enjoyed the lunch game, but we were Cuba so the Americans didn't give us any money.

Hey Snorlax,
Who was your teacher last year because I had Ms. Watt last year and we learned a bit of flash animation. It was really complicated for the little 5 second movie that actually came out of it. Oh well!

Lol, I had Ms.Delaine! We did some computer stuff, but not as much as Ms.Watt's class did. It sounds cool to learn it figuresk8er, and I've heard it's a somewhat hard process, but luckily, I'll remember it all for use at my home school. ^_^

Cuba? Lol masteryoda, my table was Haiti, we only had $23 to buy stuff! We were lucky that SOMEONE at my table had a Sharpie with him. Nothing a few zeroes at the end of the number 2 on a piece of paper will do, ehehe...the garlic bread was AWESOME!

(btw masteryoda, when you put a piece of text between html tags, the text changes to be bold, or italicized. ;)

Thanks Snorlax, but about the money thing, didn't you guys get caught? Anyways, I can't wait for tommorow and the next blog post, cuz' this topic is getting pretty worn out.

Lol, Snorlax our table was behind yours so I might have seen you at the conference. Loved the garlic bread also, our table bought TONS!
I also thought the paper cube game was pretty cool, but we were Haiti so we didn't have a lot of resources. But we only used tape and paper because we ripped the paper and taped it together to make many cubes. At one point I was an ambassador, but someone else took my job :P.

I personally thought that the trip to Onondaga farms truly sparked the thoughts within the students and teachers that came to the program. Talking to my fellow classmates that took place in coming to the program said that they truly enjoyed the experience.

For those of you who missed out on Laurel creek, it was fun but super cold. I couldn't even stay out the whole time to eat lunch because i couldn't feel my toes. Some peple were warming up near the fire and they melted the rubber on the soles of their shoes. then we accidently put out our fire and people started eating raw hotdogs. It was disgusting!

Raw hot dogs. No offense to anyone here, but even I can't assure the safety of eating a raw hot dog, and trust me, I EAT ALMOST EVERYTHING! Lol...

I completely forgot about that Thanx for Food song. Sorta...well, interesting song, in my view.

Yeah, I've got enrichment tomorrow! /\_/\ Better not forget my blog form.

Well, we had a good day at McQuarrie today. And qazwsxedc123, a normal day at McQuarrie means:

-talking for like, half the day (which I personally enjoy)
-working on the computers
-getting into conflicts over certain issues
-pizza & milk (YUM!)
-connecting with new friends and old
-having a good laugh or two
-learning useful, random things

(Oh, and having your lock jam on you!)

Snorlax- ._.

I find that strange. I was Cuba and we only had 46$ in the luch game, and I don't think that Iran is that much more developed than Cuba. I tried to look it up, but there's no information on Cuba available to the public (probably because of Cuba's issues with the U.S., what with the communism and Cuban missile crisis).

snorlax, you left out a few things about a typical day at mcq.
-seeing how many times you can get the teacher on duty to talk to you
-Arguing over some pointless thing
-sharing stories that are normally gruesome
-trying to figure out 21st century chess(it happens every year)
By the way, are u gonna put some laurel creek pics on the website?

Yes I have Snorlax, and I can prove it. Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:GDP_nominal_per_capita_world_map_IMF_figures_for_year_2005.png. There it will show the wealth of most of the countries wealth per capita (I still have to figure out what that means) and you will see Cuba is white, indicating no data was available.

Try the CIA World Fact Book to get information on countries.....
https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.html
You can search any country and get lots of info.
Good Luck! Hope it helps!

I was wrong. The CIA factbook says that Iran has more than twice the buying power than Cuba. However, just for interest, the Cuban healthcare system is much more available to the people than Iran's.
