A riddle for you!
Here is a riddle to solve!!! If you share your ideas and questions here, maybe you can come up with a solution together! Good luck!
A girl has a 12 litre jug of rootbeer, and wants to split it in half, but only has an 8 litre and a 5 litre jug. How can she do it?
Happy Solving!

she has a 12 litre jg but 8+5=13 ??????
o she dumps 1 litre of pop out the she takes 4 litres from the 8 litre 1 and 2 litres form the other 1
Is that right???
None of the jugs have measurement lines on them, so you'd be guessing if you tried to 'dump out' 1 litre. You don't have to guess - there is a way to do this accurately!
Good start though!
Who drinks 12 litres of root beer??
Ms. Watt, that's impossible. Half of 12 L is 6 L, which means that both jugs have to have at least a 6 L capacity. However, the one jug only holds 5 L. Could you please clarify?
Ahaha, I know how to do this!
You have to interchange between the jugs...somehow. So like, pour some in one jug til it's full, and dump it into the other jug, and keep going.
Here's an example of what I mean (yes, this site is appropriate for school needs, and haha, yes it's on PBSKids).

Now, we have 3 different types of jugs to work with: the 12L, 8L, and 5L. We need to pour from one container to the other in a certain way so that the end result is that the 12L has 6L and the 8L has 6L (we obviously can't fill the 5L jug with half of 12L.)
Anyone up for the challenge of writing it out?
-Snorlax. +_+
* The only difference between the site's game and the riddle is that we can't waste any of the root beer.
WOAH, I got it (after going through a horrendously confusing mamount of charts and numbers, that is.)
At least I think I got it...¯-¯"
Masteryoda - it's certainly not impossible! Would I do that to you?????
I think snorlax has clarified for you! Good Luck! (Thanks for not giving this away yet Snorlax!)
Sorry, I forgot you can use the 12 L jug. I think I have a solution. Fill the 8 L jug and pour the other 4 L into the 5 L jug. Put the 4 L back into the 12 L jug. Measure the height of the 8 L jug, take the number, and divide it by 4. Take that number and measure that height up the side of the jug. Mark that point. From that point measure the same number of centimeters up again and mark that point. Repeat that process one more time and you will have divided the 8 L jug in quarters, and each quarter up is 2 L. Pour the top quarter into the 12 L jug and you're done. Am I allowed to do that?
You can only use the jugs, you dont have a ruler, a pen, or anything like that.
Sorry Masteryoda, 1st_div is correct. No rulers, no pens, no marks on the jugs. They're not necessary - trust me! Keep trying!
***WARNING SPOILER***
No!!! I thought you had to have 4 in each jug...I had the answer all along.
1. Put 8 in the 8-jar -
4 are left in the 12 jar,
2. Fill the 5 jar with water from the 8 jar
3. Empty the 5 jar into the 12 jar
9 in the 12-jar already, 3 in the 8-jar, 5 jar is empty
4. Empty the 8 jar into the 5-jar
5. Fill the empty 8-jar with water from the 12l-jar
6. Pour 2 from the 8-jar into the 5-jar
7. Empty the 5 jar into the 12 jar
6l in the 12l-jar, 6l in the 8l-jar, 5l-jar is empty
WOW that took long to write..
1st div, I haven't read yours yet. Now c'mon!!!. I'm sure you could figure it out without using markers and rulers, but why make it so hard? Besides, most kids our age living in North America have access to rulers and markers or pens. Anyhow, I'll try to solve it the way I'm supposed to.
Who drinks 12 litres of root beer??
LOL, so true, but think I get it (I am far to lazy to type it all up again though as a couple people have already done that:)).
that's confuzing...dont you have any easier ones?
Have you heard the one where you have a 5 litre and 3 litre, and you need to make 4 litres? Besides, if you had rulers it wouldn't be a riddle anymore, would it?
I don't think it is as hard as you guys are making it. I think you could just pour half of the 12 litres in to the 8 litre jug and be done with it
You can't just pour half of into the eight litre, because you don't know exactly what half is, and your estimate could be completely wrong!!!
*Spoiler*
I got it!!
First you fill the 8, then you fill the 5 from the eight. You then pour the 5 into the 12. this is how the jugs look now
12=9 litres 8=3 litres 5=o litres
You dump the 3 litres from the 8 into the 5, then fill the eight from the 12, and add 2 litres from the eight to fill the 5. Now you dump the 5 into the 12 which means that the twelve and the eight litre jugs both have six litres in them, making them perfectly divided in half.
Wow. I made mine so complicated, but I guess I can omit some steps.
Unfortunately, I'm not going to be here for this weeks class because I have a trip. I guess I should post my answer now:
| 12 | 8 | 5 | <---Jugs
|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|
| 12 | 0 | 0 | <---Steps
| 04 | 8 | 0 |
| 00 | 8 | 4 |
| 08 | 0 | 4 |
| 08 | 4 | 0 |
| 03 | 4 | 5 |
| 03 | 8 | 1 |
| 11 | 0 | 1 |
| 11 | 1 | 0 |
| 06 | 1 | 5 |
| 06 | 6 |
These riddles I find very fun. But a lot of times, they make us think a bit harder than we're supposed to, don't you think?
You're right 1st div, it wouldn't be a riddle. But don't you think this is more like a math problem?
QUOTE from snorlax "think a bit harder than we're supposed to" .......... well, well, THIS is something we need to talk about this week!!!
Great work THINKERS!!! See you soon!
assuming she is sharing it I have the answer
couldnt u just like break the jug in half
then the mixture would poor out iin half
that is just my theory because i am sick and my brain REALLY isnt working so yah
I just got on blogger, but i think i might have solved it. looks good. :)
Were in class now!
ther are a lot of answers.
Ms. Watt,( or anyone) i've got a riddle for you.
there is a man at home, and there is a man who wants to come home. the amn who wants to come home is scared of the man at home, because the man at home is wearing a mask. Who are these men?
You can ask me any yes or no questions about the riddle
We are making this more complicated than it is, because I gave it t a kid at my school and he solved it in less than 5 minutes!!!!! ARRRGGGHHHH!!!!!!!
Put 6 litres into the 8 litre jug and leave the remaining 6 litres in the 12 litre jug. You don't need the 5 litre jug at all.
Hey figure sk8er,
so i solved your riddle...
they are baseball players
no no no you didnt jessi i told you that!! she didnt i knew that! she just got to the blog part quicker! hey figure sk8er do you have anymore of them riddles??
...and if the answer is wrong then yes jessi you did infact answer it but only if the answer is wrong...
