What is a Paradox??

The link below takes you a very interesting site that explains paradoxes and gives several examples of these logic conundrums. I think you will find these fascinating!!! Visit the site - read some of the paradoxes and tell us what you think. Are you perplexed? Do you understand? What is your favorite? Which one drives you insane?????

The barber paradox and the True/False paradox are my favourites.

Just out of curiosity, do you think oxymorons are similar to paradoxes in any way? You know, sayings like jumbo shrimp, acting naturally, etc.

These are really interesting. My science teacher actually has a few in his class.

I think the Liar's Paradox is a bit of an neat one.

I know this is a little off topic, but I'd like some people to see the riddle puzzle I posted on the last post with the 9-Dots.

This is the link to the post: https://www2.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=38717196&postID=80417419935628940

I like the liar paradox the best because there is no right or wrong answer.

I really liked the unexpected hanging one. It just goes to show that you shouldn't use logic with people who are going to kill you. Ihe ending also kind of surprised me.

The Achilles And The Tortoise paradox maks sense in a way, but I don't fully understand it. What I mean is that it says that the fastest thing in the world couldn't beat a tortoise, because by the time the fast moving thing got to where the tortoise was the tortoise will have moved on. This will continue for infinite. That would be true, if the two things were moving at the same speed. When the one attempting to catch up is travelling at a greater speed, it will be able to reach and pass the thing it was chasing eventually. With Achilles and the Tortoise, Achilles will have caught the tortoise when he is able to step on him. Does anybody have a different view?

I read the barber paradox and thought it was pretty cool except that it says the barber shaves everyone in the VILLAGE that does not shave him. Therefore the barber is shaved by someone OUTSIDE of the village.

I just read the liar paradox, and it's now my favourite. I'm going to ask some people at my home school the question to see if they notice the paradox.

I liked the liar paradox as weel and the heap paradox is very interesting. Makes you think about why we don't put good definitions on our words. The barber paradox is also very clever!

I don't like the unexpected hanging one because the criminals logic is flawed

I agree. The criminal's logic is messed up because while he will know on the seventh day if he's alive that he will die that day, every morning before the seventh after the trial he will wake up in fear of death, which is what the judge wanted.

I have another paradox to add to the list of ones whose logic is flawed: the Tristram Shandy Paradox. It says that Tristram is writing an autobiograpghy but is so slow that the events of one day take him a year to write down. The question is if he keeps up this pattern will he ever finish. The creator of the paradox says that he will eventually finish, because there's an infinite number of years. I, and I believe I'm not alone in this belief, strongly disagree with that logic. It's plain to see that the man will never finish his autobiography, because it'll take him 365 years just to finish the the first year of his life, and by then another (whatever 365*365 is)will have built up for him to write about! Also, there's a simpler answer. Because of the amount of time it takes to finish al those years and he has eternity to live, he can't die and therefore will never finish.

P.S. That took forever to write!!!!!!!!!

I agree masteryoda. More and more things will just keep happening in his lfe, so he will never be able to record them all before he dies.

I think you missed something figure s8er, because according to the paradox he'll never die (as I pointed out at the bottom of my last comment). He has eternity to write the autobiography, which is the base of the person who wrote the paradox's argument. Because he'll never finish the autobiography, he'll never die. Does that make sense?
